What is Wing Chun?

Wing Chun is a style of Kung Fu. It is simple and practical with short and efficient techniques. Although the movements are easy to learn, the internal aspects of the system have incredible depth.

At Chi Sau Club you will be taught the traditional curriculum of Wing Chun, as well as instructed in the unique internal training methods of Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin, with an emphasis on correct posture, alignment, relaxation, and focus.

People of all ages and sizes can develop tremendous power and stability, while improving health, posture and mental clarity. Learning genuine Wing Chun offers a lifetime of enjoyment and personal development.

Meet Sifu Mark Spence

Sifu Mark Spence, the founder of Chi Sau Club, has been training in Wing Chun Kung Fu since 1984, and teaching Wing Chun full time (40+ hours a week) since 1988. This tremendous wealth of experience has refined his skill to the highest level, and is reflected in his ability to explain even the most complex aspects of the Wing Chun system in an easily understandable manner. Sifu Mark spent 6 years working as a bouncer in Napier, New Zealand, meaning that he has first-hand experience with the reality of violence.

How does Wing Chun at Chi Sau Club differ?

The aim of Chi Sau Club is to pass on the teachings of Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin in a pure and unadulterated fashion. Chu Shong Tin focused on the internal side of Wing Chun, with an emphasis on students attaining what he called “Nim Tau”, a certain state of mind-body connection which when attained causes one to naturally move in a relaxed, integrated and powerful manner.

The main focus of the training at Chi Sau Club is therefore primarily on developing a deeper level of mind-body connection. We place emphasis on developing certain principles of movement rather than drilling lots of complicated techniques. Students are taught the “Four Pillars” of CST Wing Chun (Tai Gong/Stance, Sing Hei/Upright Spine, Fong Song/Relaxation, Herng/Aim), and all exercises are linked back to these fundamental qualities. With a stable stance, upright posture, integrated and relaxed body, and pinpoint aim, even an old man or woman with small stature and no brute strength can produce tremendous force.

We are not a fitness school. Training is relaxed and casual, and flexibility and athleticism are not required. Students are welcome to train at their own pace. Forms are practiced slowly and in-depth with emphasis on understanding the body-mechanics and leverage aspects of every movement. Practical application, along with the development of fighting reflexes, is addressed during Chi Sau (sticking hands) training.
Although the internal path can be slow, difficult and requires commitment, it quickly becomes addictive once one can appreciate and produce this hidden power. If you enjoy using your mind, and seek to enhance your mental and physical well-being through meditative and physical exercise, you’ll enjoy this process.

Hong Kong Style Training – No Uniforms, Rankings, or Gradings

As in Hong Kong, most of the trappings of western martial arts schools such as compulsory uniforms and official ranks are not enforced in Chi Sau Club. This creates a friendlier and more productive training environment. We do have branded t-shirts and hoodies available, but many students simply train in their favourite comfortable clothing.
We also have no gradings. Classes are friendly, relaxed, and free from the pomp and ceremony found in many schools. Tea and coffee provided.
