Class Descriptions

Beginners are welcome in all classes (though some will be less suitable for a trial lesson) and every session involves learning to develop “internal” power (generating force using the movement and rotation of our centre of mass as opposed to muscular strength). Please contact us if you have any questions about class suitability or booking a free trial lesson.

General Class – The aim of this class is to help students develop an intellectual and physical understanding of every aspect of Wing Chun. Exercises and discussion are conducted by our most senior instructors and junior students will also get hands on assistance from seniors. As a student’s understanding deepens, the various aspects of Wing Chun will start to fit together like a giant jig-saw puzzle. It is incredibly stimulating to anyone with an enquiring mind.

Class with Sifu Mark – This group session runs like an open seminar so that everyone can experience what is unique about this approach to Wing Chun. All principles of the system are covered and students receive hands on instructions and demonstrations. Sifu Mark teaches full time and is in attendance for almost every class throughout the week, keeping a watchful eye on students progress. Given the hands on methodology of his approach, much of this time is dedicated to individual instruction via one-on-one lessons. Students are always welcome to listen in or follow on as he teaches one-on-one and questions are welcomed outside of these lessons.

Internals Class – While all our sessions involve the development of the type of internal power Chu Shong Tin was renowned for (using the movement and rotation of our centre of mass as opposed to muscular strength), this class places additional emphasis on the introspective practices required to develop this ability. A standing meditation is taught with the goal of raising the spine, expanding the joints, relaxing the body and focusing the mind. In CST’s words: “When you can do this well you will feel a particular sensation and physical transformation. This effect is very hard to describe, so let’s just call it chi.”. As well as developing the right condition in the body, this practice also develops the correct mental condition (a type of flow state) that underpins this approach to Wing Chun. For the majority of our students, this aspect of training soon becomes by far the most rewarding, providing numerous benefits (reduced stress, better focus and an overall improved sense of mental and physical wellbeing) that go far beyond just learning to defend oneself. This article by Chu Shong Tin provides more information about this approach to internal Wing Chun.

Chi Sau Class – Chi Sau or sticking hands is generally misunderstood in martial arts circles, including those who claim to teach Wing Chun. Basically, it is a co-operative exercise that develops the fighting reflexes of Wing Chun. Done correctly it is tremendous fun and free of the stress that comes with the hard sparring employed by most western schools. As one’s skill develops, a student’s power and speed improve to such a degree that the desired reflexive response comes out in real combat though improvisation rather than muscle memory. It is important to understand that Wing Chun fighting will look quite different to Chi Sau. Chi Sau sparring involves concepts far more profound than simply trying to attack and defend using the shapes and movements contained in the Wing Chun forms.

Open Training / Chi Sau – Students are free to work on whatever aspect of Wing Chun they wish to. Instructors are there to answer questions and assist with training. This is a chance for the students to fill in gaps in their knowledge and take an active part in managing their progression through the system. New comers will be given exercises and guidance so that they are able to grasp what they should practice and how. The 8pm-9pm Chi Sau sessions from Monday to Wednesday are an opportunity to roll with each other in a playful manner and embed the skillset learned in class by developing reflexes and the ability to improvise. Great fun and highly recommended.

Kids Class (suitable for children aged 3 – 11 years) – For info on the weekday Kids Classes phone Chris Lay 0411 430 211. Saturday classes are run by Scott Smith who can be reached on 0417 492 382 or by visititing https://www.dragontaokungfu.com.au/childrens-classes/

Monthly Social Club Event – we hold monthly social gatherings for students to train and socialise. These are free events open to all current and former students, with the aim of nurturing students passion and curiosity for the art outside of the above classes. Instructors will also often organise impromptu after hours training sessions via our WhatsApp group that all are welcome to attend.
